Other Veterinary Organisations & Bodies

The national representative body for the British veterinary profession. It is a voluntary body with over 10,000 members. Veterinary surgeons work in private practice, in industry, in government service and in research, both in the UK and overseas. Most working veterinary surgeons are members of the Association and of more than 50 geographical and specialist divisions.

The official journal of the British Veterinary Association (published weekly). It contains news, comment, letters and peer-reviewed clinical research papers covering a wide range of veterinary topics. The Record is a long standing supporter of VBF and continues to be a great way for the Fund to reach the profession.

The regulatory body for veterinary surgeons in the UK. It has three main statutory functions:
To deal with issues of veterinary professional conduct
To monitor standards of veterinary education
To maintain a Register of Veterinary Surgeons who are eligible to practise in the UK.

The RCVS was established in 1844 by Royal Charter to be the governing body of the veterinary profession. Its statutory duties are currently laid out in the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. The RCVS safeguards the interests of the public and animals by ensuring that only those registered with the College can carry out acts of veterinary surgery.
